Jingle Bell Rock: The Details

Jingle Bell Rock!
All ages "Rock Band 2" video game tournament!
Monday, December 7
5-7:30pm
Encinitas Library

This December, the Encinitas Library will have “Rock Band 2” video game tournament, where groups of four people, of any age, can sign up and compete against other "bands" for fun and prizes! Grand prize will be a $25 gift card to Gamestop for each member of the band! Second prize will be free passes to the Museum of Making Music.

To get you into the Holiday Spirit AND the Spirit of Rock, we’re encouraging everyone to dress up like a rock star, or to dress up in the theme of the winter holidays (or both! Maybe we’ll see some punk rock reindeer). Our judges will choose the Best Dressed Band, and for the Best Individual Costume. Prizes will be $25 gift certificates to Lou’s Records.

And we want spectators! We're playing this thing on a full-size movie screen, so everyone can see. Bring your friends and family, bring people to cheer you on and sing along! This should be a fun event of music, food (did we mention the free pizza?), competition and prizes.

The tournament is for people of all ages, so put little Sally on vocals, put Grandpa on drums, and ROCK.

A few important things here:

  • You have to sign up in advance. Call us, or come down to the library, and give us the names of the four people on your team. We’ve only got room for 15 13 "bands" in the tournament, so hurry up and register. If you sign up after we’re full, we’ll put your name on a waiting list and contact you if space opens up.

  • For time reasons, you can only pick a song that is five minutes or under. A list of those songs will be at the end of this post. You’ll need to have your song picked out when you sign in at the tournament

  • We expect you to know how the game works. You get more points for playing on higher difficulty levels, you get more points for using Overdrive, complicated songs are more points than simple songs, but we’re not going to hold your hand through the contest and explain everything to you. But if you want to go in blind and just have a good time, that’s fine too.

  • The official rules and song list follow (although we may tweak the rules slightly if necessary).

Official Encinitas Library Rock Band 2 Tournament Rules

Check in is at 5:00 PM. Anyone not checked in before 5:30 risks losing their spot in the tournament.
  • Each band is comprised of as many members as they want (up to four) and they may play at any difficulty they desire.
  • Bands are allowed to have a band member sing and play an instrument at the same time.
  • Each band plays one (1) song of the band’s choice. If band fails out, they can retry the song one (1) time.
  • At the end of the song the band’s in-game score will be recorded. When the song is over do not play any more notes. Do not skip past the scoring screen before the judges can record your score.
  • After all bands are ranked, the top three (3) bands enter the final round.
  • If a band member chooses to sing and play an instrument during the qualifying round, they must also sing and play the instrument during the final round.
  • There is no age limit (young or old) to band members
  • Contestants must use the controllers provided by the tournament, not controllers brought in from home.
  • All decisions made by the judges are final.
  • Photos may be taken and used for library publicity. If you do not want your photo taken, please let a staff member know.

Finals

  • Top three (3) bands will play the same song, one chosen by the judges. Highest score wins. If a band fails out during the Finals, they will not be allowed to retry the song.
  • In the event of a tie, the tied bands will participate in a tie breaker round.
  • During the tie breaker round, each band will play one (1) song of the judge’s choice. At the end of the tie breaker round, the band with the highest overall score will be named the Champion.

Costume Contest Rules

  • All contestants in the tournament are encouraged to dress up in the night’s theme: either dressing up as “rock stars” or in a winter holiday theme (or a combination of both).
  • Costumes will be judged on creativity and style. All decisions will be made by the judges, judges’ decisions are final.
  • Awards will be given for the Best Dressed Band, and for Best Individual Costume.

Code of Conduct

  • Anyone competing in an unsportsmanlike manner or in a manner that is not in compliance with these rules may be immediately disqualified from this tournament. Unsportsmanlike conduct includes, but is not limited to, the following:

Jingle Bell Rock Band!

Brief announcement: we will be having a Rock Band 2 video game tournament on December 7. We're calling it "Jingle Bell Rock" because that name is just a tiny bit funny.

Sign ups will start soon, but you'll need to have a full "band" (4 people) to compete. This will be an all ages contest, so you'll be competing against little kids, college students, mom and dad, Grampa Frankie, the whole crew. It's also a costume contest, and there will be prizes for the best "rock star" or holiday themed outfits too (Best Dressed Band and Best Individual Costume).

We'll be giving away gift cards to Gamestop and Lou's Records to the winners, and there will also be free pizza. Should be lots of goofy fun.

Nerdfighters Gathering
Sunday, November 15
6-8pm
Hank Green is a singer, videoblogger, half of Brotherhood 2.0, and co-founder of the Nerdfighters. What are "Nerdfighters"? I found a good quote about it over at their website:

"Nerdfighters are about raising money and awareness for important causes. Nerdfighters are about building a supportive community of friends. Nerdfighters are about stupid beautiful projects and making each other laugh and think with t-shirts and pocket protectors and rants about the situation in Pakistan which sucks right now. In the contemporary world where things fall apart and the center can not hold you have to imagine a community where there is no center... A lot of life is about doing things that don’t suck with people who don’t suck."

Anyhow, it should end up being an event with lots of folks looking to save the world and have a good time together. Hank will give a talk, perform some songs, and then all the current and future Nerdfighters will have a chance to meet and laugh and scheme. Come on down, should be a fun evening.
